Something to cut with —> a butter knive, a small kitchen knife, or an extaco knife
Something to apply water with —> a paint brush, a q-tip, or even your finger will work
Something to roll out fondant with —> a rolling pin, a large bottle (like a wine bottle), or can (like a room temperature can of soda)
Tips & Tricks
Make sure your surface always has a light layer of cornstarch to prevent your fondant from sticking to your workstation. If your hands are sticky you can rub cornstarch into your hands. If your fondant is very sticky you can mix cornstarch into your fondant until it is smooth and not sticky.
If your fondant is dry, try kneading it again. If it’s still dry you can add a bit of cornstarch or coconut oil to soften it some.
Always put fondant scrapes back in the bag so they do not dry out.
Cover the Cupcake
Take the last cupcake out of your kit and squeeze your bag of icing ino an “O” shape on top of the cupcake
Use a butter knife to smooth the icing all over the top of your cupcake. It doesn't need to be perfect but it should consistently cover the entire top of the cupcake.
Take the remaining piece of white fondant and mix in 1 blue marble sized fondant and 2 yellow marble sized fondants to get the Architect Doozer green..
Roll the Architect Doozer green fondant into a circle slightly larger than the large circle cutter in your kit.
Press the circle cutter into the rolled out fondant to make the circle. Set aside scraps.
Carefully line the circle with the top of the iced cupcake and place on top.
Gently smooth the top of the cupcake so it will conform to the top of your cupcake.
Eyes, Nose, and Mouth
Add a small amount of water in the center of the cupcake and place the yellow nose you set aside earlier in the middle of the cupcake..
Take a pinch of black and roll into 2 balls, about the size of a peppercorn, to make the two eyeballs.
Slightly dampen the two black eyeballs.
Add the eyes above the nose to the face
Take a small pinch of black and roll it into a tiny tube in the palm of your hand.
Trim down to about ½“
With your fingers shape into a smile shape and let sit for a moment.
Hair, Mustache, and Place the Mouth
For the hair: Hold your piping bag from the back. Starting at the top of the cupcake, squeeze the bag from the back and while guiding the piping to the edge.
Repeat on the top half of the cupcake to fill out the hair
For the Mustache: Starting in the middle of the cupcake, right under the nose, squeeze the bag from the back and pipe a line about ¾” - 1” long. Remove the nose if it’s in the way and add back.
Dampen the back of the smile
Place on the cupcake. Use your fingers, a dry q-tip, or back of a paintbrush to adjust.
Hat
Take a chunk of blue fondant about gumball size. Roll into a log a little over an inch long.
Place on top of the hair at the top of the cupcake
Mix a gray color by taking a marble size piece of the Architect Doozer green and a very tiny amount of pink. The pink neutralizes the green to make gray. If it still looks green add a little more pink.
Roll gray in your hand and shape into a flattened rectangle with rounded edges.
Press the piece longways into the table to flatten one of the sides.
Place under the blue portion of the hat to see if it needs to be shaped more or trimmed
Trim if needed
Add water to the back
Add under the blue portion of the hat
